Rock, Hubert H. Humphrey, 1968
Object Details
- Description
- Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, the 1968 Democratic presidential candidate, had a life-long connection to the field of pharmacy. Born above his father’s drugstore, he earned a pharmacist’s license from Capitol College of Pharmacy in Denver and worked for his father for six years during the Depression. Although he did not enjoy the job they shared, Humphrey credited his “extraordinary” father with teaching him to value knowledge, books, and his true professional calling, politics. Continuing his connection to health care, Humphrey’s first bill as a senator from Minnesota proposed a health insurance program for the elderly that would eventually evolve into Medicare. His 1968 campaign for president against Richard Nixon featured slogans like “Humphrey Fills the Prescription” and pharmaceutical symbols such as those painted on this decorative campaign rock. Humphrey’s connection to pharmacy continues to this day. At his death in 1978, the American Pharmacists Association honored him by establishing the annual Hubert H. Humphrey Award which recognizes a member who has made major contributions in government and/or legislative service.
