School Management by Dr. Albert N. Raub
Object Details
- Description
- School Management was designed for use both as a text and as a reference for teachers, parents, and school officers. Among the topics covered are: hygiene, grading, study aids, ethics, and punishments. It is purportedly based on the successful experience of teachers in the United States and other countries. The recommendations conform to the conventional wisdom of the late 19th Century, some of which is sadly outdated. For example, the chapter on School Government states: "When disobedience is willful the punishment should be severe. Where pupils openly disregard and defy authority corporal punishment is justifiable, and it may be applied if the teacher possess the necessary physical strength."
- An inside front cover page contains the signature of likely former teacher “Mary L. Stevens, ’07, Winter Term.” The blue front cover and spine contain a black floral design. It is 285 pages in length.
- Educator and author Dr. Albert N. Raub (1840-1904) was a former President of Delaware College in Newark, Delaware. He previously taught at the State Normal School in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. His other works included: Lessons in English, Practical English Grammar, Practical Rhetoric, Studies in English and American Literature, and Methods of Teaching. Some of his works, including School Management, were published by the family house of Raub & Co. based in New York City.
