- Vulcanizers were used to harden rubber by means of sulfur and heat. The "Dr. B. T. Whitney, Buffalo, N.Y." inscription on this example refers to Benjah T. Whitney (1813-1869), a physician, dentist, and founding partner of the Buffalo Dental Manufacturing Co.
