- L-1304 (Old Port Chert): Direct collection from outcrop. Provenience includes bedrock and roadcut. Not a collection from archaeological context. Collection includes raw material, outer surface, and naturally-weathered specimens.
- L-1304 (Old Port Chert):
- Old Port Chert is also known as Corriganville, Eliberry, Herndon, Mahantango, New Creek, New Scotland, Penns Creek, Shriver, or Troxelvile. It is black or white light to dark gray. It becomes white or gray when weathered. It has a very fine to coarse texture. Deposits includes isolated nodules. Cherts are thin to medium bedded in the lower portion of the formation and as continuous beds in the middle portion. Also deposits in residuum.
- Geology remarks: Epoch- Devonian, Series- Lower Devonian, Form- Old Port, Member- Ridgeley/Shriver/Mandata/Corriganville/Falling Springs(?)
- Location remarks: Well exposed along Route 225 one-quarter mile (0.4 km) south of Mandata, Northumberland Co., PA; Exposed along West Branch Mahantango Creek where the creek makes a sharp bend to the west from its north-northwest course 1.25 miles (2 km) west of Mahantango, Snyder & Juniata counties, PA; Where present chert occurs as float along the Susquehanna River and in Deer Valley; West Perry Township, Snyder Co., PA.
