Mortar And Pestle
Object Details
- Notes
- From card: "About 3 ft. below the surface, part of a collection of Indian crania stone implements, shell, etc., from California Mounds."
- As of 2024, there are two mortars and no pestles that bear this number: one round mortar and one rougher mortar with an obviously refreshed catalogue number (black ink number on white background; number may be wrong?). The round mortar with this number is visible (with a pestle in it) immediately to the right of the four figures towards the front in a photograph taken at the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia. Interior view, Department of the Interior exhibits in the United States Government Building, featuring archeological and anthropological artifacts, prepared by Bureau of Indian Affairs and Smithsonian Institution. Smithsonian Institution Archives, Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 95, Box 61, Folder 05, Image No. SIA_000095_B61_F05_009. https://siarchives.si.edu/collections/siris_arc_401301
