Man's Leggings
Object Details
- Notes
- Collector's notes, written on tag attached to object: Pyuma tribe, Taitung Hsien, Shabakan to Rika (village) area, Taiwan (SE Formosa). Men's leggings ("chaps"). Probably confined to ceremonial uses, such as dances, etc. Fully embroidered 100 pacer snakeskin designs (highly stylized) in indigo-dyed China grass [ramie] hand-loomed [woven] base cloth. These are very traditional and characteristically Pyuma. The old plaid gingham (?) trim cloth is an interesting trade item. Each of these leggings has the typically Pyuma embroidered tab waist tie ends. The specimen with the red and yellow waist band is said to be upwards of 150 years old [in 1964-i.e. dates to ca. 1814] but in any case, it would seem reasonable to attribute both pieces to the 19th century. The use of coarse Chinese wool thread without subsequent unraveling and respinning is evident in both examples.
