Object Details
- Notes
- Part of mass stranding-FI marks well healed-NOT cause of death. Marks include healed scar on mid right lower jaw, healed notch on dorsal fin, healed notch near tip of left flipper. Head necropsied at UNCW on 21-Jan-05. NPS initially counted 33 pilot whales, 15 dead and 18 alive in the surf (at 0750 hrs). First responders on the beach had to cease work because the high tide (at 1149 hrs EST) and narrow beaches restricted access to the whales. Upon return to the beach after high tide, they found 31 animals, seven of which were alive. It was thought that 2 of the initially reported dead animals washed out with the tide and were not relocated. They were later given level A records KMS431 and KMS432. (LAD, 18 Oct 12) Mass stranding of 33 pilot whales included in UME with 3 other animals for a total of 36 animals (UMESE0501Spp). This event was later integrated with the 2004 multi-species east coast UME (UMEEC0403spp). (LAD, 18 Oct 2012)
