Roald Amundsen

Object Details

Exhibition Label
Born Borge, Norway
Roald Amundsen was a leading polar explorer in the early twentieth century. At the time, the search for commercial sea routes and new lands extended to the Earth’s poles. Amundsen first laid eyes on Antarctica in 1897, while serving on a Belgian expedition.
In 1903, he launched an expedition aboard the seventy-foot fishing boat Gjøa. His aim was to be the first to navigate through the Northwest Passage north of Canada and the Canadian Arctic Islands. The crew completed the icy journey in 1906 when it reached Nome in the U.S. territory of Alaska. In 1909, U.S. explorer Robert E. Peary (on view nearby) claimed that he had reached the North Pole (claims that later were disproved). Amundsen, therefore, set to reach the South Pole, and achieved it in 1911.
Newspaper illustrator Oscar Cesare made this portrait five years before Amundsen died in a plane accident in the Arctic Ocean. The U.S. press coverage of Amundsen's exploration trips illustrates the broad appeal of the “race to the Earth’s poles.”
