- Owney received this Columbian half dollar coin from St. Louis, Missouri, postmaster J. B. Harlow on May 24, 1894. Columbian half dollars were popular collecting coins at the time. The first US commemorative issue coins, they were minted for the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893.
