- Description
- Owney received this specially engraved medal when he attended the Southern California Kennel Club in April 1893. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times on April 21, 1893, Owney was a star of the show. His presence was not only noted in a headline to the story “Owney, the Mail Service Traveler, on Exhibition,” but was the leading story in the newspaper’s report on the show. “Contrary to the general rules of bench shows, Owney, the celebrated canine traveler . . . was yesterday taken in charge by the club and assigned to a stall near the entrance, where he has been a drawing card all day.” The medallion reads:
