2c Red Jefferson domestic card
Object Details
- Description
- This postcard was mailed by a serviceman on his arrival into the port of New York after his deployment during World War I. The free mail for the military privilege did not extend to mail originating within the US, hence the use of the 2-cent domestic card.
- The partially pre-printed arrival notice informs the recipient where the sender will travel to next. On this card, Robert Henderson of the 505 Engineering Unit crossed out the line for a “Hospital” location and indicated that he was heading to Camp Merrett. The pre-printed message assures the recipient (Mrs. C. H. Henderson of Princeton, West Virginia) that he will write soon.
- The Salvation Army distributed this stationery free of charge to servicemen returning home. Other non-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross, the YMCA, the Jewish Welfare League, and the Knight of Columbus also donated postcards and writing materials to military personnel during World War I. The idea was to reassure families in the United States of the wellbeing of servicemen and to encourage the servicemen to communicate regularly with their families. The military supported this initiative as it was widely believed to increase morale.
