Sachsen 1913 Flight to Haida/Böhmen
Object Details
- Description
- Souvenir 5 heller Austrian postcard depicting the airship Sachsen (LZ17) which was to have been carried on the airship's flight to Haida/Böhmen on October 20, 1913. An additional 5 heller Austrian stamp had been affixed, and the card was cancelled with a special "Zeppelin-Schiff Sachsen/Flugplatz Haida Böhmen" ("Zeppelin ship Sachsen/Airfield Haida Bohemia") postmark dated October 20, 1913.
- This was the first officially approved special zeppelin postmark, and it was authorized by the Austrian postal administration. The Sachsen started her flight from Dresden to Haida on October 20, but heavy fog forced her to turn around at Bad Schandau an der Elbe and return to Dresden. A second flight was planned for November 2, but this too was cancelled due to poor weather. The flight was finally completed on November 9, 1913. As there is no Sachsen onboard postmark on this souvenir card, it was ultimately not transported to its destination by the Sachsen.
