- Interrupted Graf Zeppelin America Flight cover
Interrupted Graf Zeppelin America Flight cover
Object Details
- Description
- The Graf Zeppelin's first 1929 flight to America (Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst) was planned for May 16. Engine problems early in the flight forced the airship to land at Cuers, France. This cover, to be carried on that flight, bears the special blue confirmation cachet "Luftschiff Graf Zeppelin 1. Amerikafahrt 1929" ("Airship Graf Zeppelin First America Flight") with the Statue of Liberty in the design. A special 2 Reichsmark zeppelin stamp is tied with an onboard postmark dated May 16, 1929.
- After the forced landing, mail was returned and held at Friedrichshafen until August 1, 1929, when the actual flight successfully took place. The returned mail also received a special one-line "Beförderung verzögert wegen Abbruch der 1. Amerikafahrt" ("Delayed due aborting of first America flight") in red. The back of this cover bears a New York City receiver postmark dated August 5, 1929.
