Graf Zeppelin Holland Flight cover

Object Details

Description
Cover flown by the airship Graf Zeppelin on its October 12-13 Holland flight in 1929. The cover is franked with a RM1 German airmail stamp tied by an onboard postmark dated October 13, 1929. The front bears a red confirmation postmark "Mit Luftschiff Graf Zeppelin befördert" ("Carried by airship Graf Zeppelin") as well as a private cachet in violet picturing a zeppelin. The cover was dropped over Amsterdam, where it received the brown-red cachet "AMSTERDAM 13 X 29 PER LUCHTPOST OVERGEBRACHT 2" depicting a propeller. The reverse bears an additional onboard postmark in red reading "An Bord des Luftschiffes Graf Zeppelin October 13, 1929" ("On board the airship Graf Zeppelin"). The cover is addressed to A.C. Roessler, a well-known airmail dealer in the United States, who might have added the cachet "via parachute" after the flight.
