Civil War Union patriotic cover
Object Details
- Description
- The handwriting on this Civil War Union patriotic cover is similar to that of Isaac Walters. The date on the postmark matches the month and day of the letter (1991.0291.66) by Isaac Walters written to his brother David and sister-in-law Rachel Walters when he was likely in the location that would have been serviced by the post office on the postmark. The white envelope has a red 3 cent George Washington stamp and is postmarked “Old Point Comfort Jan 27 VA.” It is addressed “Mrs. Rachel J. Walters, Royal Center, Cass Co, Indiana.” The patriotic stationery has a cachet embossed of with a portrait of “Gen.l McClellan” holding a U.S. flag on the front left and the back flap edges are colored red and blue.
