Civil War Union soldier's letter cover
Object Details
- Description
- This Civil War Union patriotic stationery has a red, blue, black printed U.S. flag on left. It is franked on lower left "Soldiers Letter / Major Wooley / Comnd Regt." and marked with circular "DUE 3" for the postage that had to be paid by the recipient. Under the July 1861 postal regulation, the unit commander’s endorsement and “soldiers letter” notation, enabled this personal military mail to not incur the additional three-cent charge for postage that had not been prepaid. The cover is postmarked "GLASGO[W] / JU[N 3- 18[63] / [K]Y" and addressed to “Mrs. D Walters / Starcitty Po / Pulaski Co / Ind."
