- Civil War US Christian Commission cover
Civil War US Christian Commission cover
Object Details
- Description
- The envelope has printed the upper left corner: “U.S. Christian Commission / SOLDIER'S LETTER.” The US Christian Commission provided stationery and postage during the Civil War as part of its welfare and spiritual support for members of the Union military. The cover has a three-cent George Washington stamp in the upper right corner that is cancelled with a cross mark and postmark "[W]ASHINGTO[N] / JUN 15 / [D].C." Washington, DC, is where some of Isaac Walter’s mail passed through while he was in the Eastern Theater. Although dated June 15, the year is not discernable in the postmark, and thus this may date to between 1862-1865. Isaac Walters’ handwriting is evident in the address to “Mrs. R. J. Walters. / Star. City / Pulaski. Co / Ind.”
