- Folded letter from Paris office at Rue Serpente
Folded letter from Paris office at Rue Serpente
Object Details
- Description
- This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue Serpente on December 29, 1870, (sixth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Langrune sur Mer, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection plus the Luc-S-Mer arrival datestamp of January 3, 1871, it is likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Armée de la Loire.
- The Armée de la Loire carried 232 kilograms of mail. A relatively uneventful flight, the balloon landed safely in the middle of a French camp formed by the Second Army of the Loire.
