- Folded letter from Paris office at Rue Cardinal-Lemoine
Folded letter from Paris office at Rue Cardinal-Lemoine
Object Details
- Description
- This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue Cardinal-Lemoine on September 23, 1870, (seventh collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Arzon. Based on the Paris collection date and the Vannes transit datestamp on the reverse, it can be reasonably assumed that this letter was carried out of Paris aboard La Ville de Florence, the second balloon to carry mail from this besieged city.
- The La Ville de Florence carried 150 kilograms of mail, and the flight was relatively uneventful, although the balloon landed near the German lines. The dispatches were taken to Mantes, where the letters entered the French mail system.
