Folded letter from Paris office at Rue de Enghien
Object Details
- Description
- This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue de Enghien on October 28, 1870, (sixth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Lille, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection plus the arrival datestamp of November 2, 1870, it is likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Colonel Charras.
- The Colonel Charras carried 460 kilograms of mail, the heaviest consignment of mail carried by a postal balloon during the Siege of Paris. The flight was uneventful, and the dispatches were forwarded to Chaumont, where the letters entered the French mail system.
