- Description
- This Volunteer Fireman Issue stamp features a portrait of Peter Stuyvesant and early and modern fire engines. The stamp commemorates the 300th anniversary of the organization of the first volunteer firemen in America by Stuyvesant. As governor of New Amsterdam (modern day New York City), Stuyvesant appointed wardens to enforce the fire ordinance rules of the city.
