- Description
- This Washington and Lee University Issue stamp commemorates the bicentenary of the establishment of the Washington and Lee University, located in Lexington, Virginia. Founded under the name Augusta Academy, it later changed its name to Liberty Hall. The university was received an endowment from George Washington. Following the end of the Civil War, former Confederate commander Robert E. Lee served as the university’s president. The school was eventually renamed to honor these two men.
