- Description
- This Champion of Liberty Issue honors Simon Bolivar, a military and political leader. He played an important role in many Latin and South American countries’ ability to gain independence from Spain. He later went on to claim dictatorial power over “Gran Colombia,” a federation of what is present day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela. He died of tuberculosis in 1830. The stamp depicts a medallion with Bolivar’s portrait.
