- Description
- This Champion of Liberty Issue stamp honors Lajos Kossuth, a leader of the Hungarian Revolution, a war for independence from the Austrian Empire. Kossuth became Regent-President of Hungary in 1849. The war ended later that year when the Hungarian forces surrendered to Russia and Austria. Kossuth went into exile, visiting and speaking with officials in the United Kingdom and the United States. He died in exile in Italy in 1894. The stamp depicts a medallion with Kossuth’s portrait.
