- Description
- This Champion of Liberty Issue stamp honors Ernst Reuter, Mayor of West Berlin from 1948-1953. Reuter was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1933. After his release in 1935, he went into exile in Turkey, where he stayed until the end to the war. He returned to Germany to help rebuild the country. He championed the idea of a free Berlin. He helped to unify the western sectors, assisted with the Berlin Airlift and stood up against the Soviet government. The stamp depicts a medallion with Reuter’s portrait.
