- Description
- This Champion of Liberty Issue stamp honors Thomas G. Masaryk, founder and first president of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935. The stamp was issued on the 110th anniversary of his birth. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Masaryk sought for a separate country for Czechs and Slovaks, independent from the Austria-Hungary Empire. Masaryk traveled around the globe, including France, Russia and the United States to advocate for his cause. The stamp depicts a medallion with Masaryk’s portrait.
