- This Civil War Centennial Issue stamp commemorates the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 during the American Civil War. General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army waged a war of attrition against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and fighting was inconclusive. The stamp features a scene of three soldiers, a cannon and trees in the background.
