- Description
- This Prominent Americans Issue stamp depicts Albert Gallatin, a Swiss-American politician. He began in career in American politics in Pennsylvania. Though he won an election to the United States Senate, he was removed from office because an opposition petition suggested he had not met the minimum citizenship requirement. He was later elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a vocal member of the Democratic-Republican Party. In 1801, he was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury by President Thomas Jefferson and served until 1814. In 1831, he founded the University of the City of New York, now New York University.
