Object Details
- Description
- On July 15, 1918, Capt. Benjamin B. Lipsner received a wire confirming that President Woodrow Wilson had accepted his resignation as captain of the Aviation Section Signal Corps. The message was sent to Lipsner at the Aviation Section Signal Corps, Supply Section, Oil and Lubrication Branch, Office of Director of Military Aeronautics. McCain, its author, asked Lipsner to acknowledge the acceptance, which he did.
- Lipsner discussed the resignation in his autobiography, writing, “Needless to say, I didn’t want to give up my commission. The Country was still at war, and no one knew how long the war would last.” With Lipsner’s resignation, the Post Office Department appointed him superintendent of the United States Aerial Mail Service, which put him in complete charge of airmail operation and maintenance. “My appointment to the post of superintendent of the Aerial Mail Service was the first of its kind in history.”
