- Description
- On June 18, 1984, Vatican City issued a series of four stamps honoring the cultural and scientific institutions of the Holy See.
- The 1,500-lire value depicts the Vatican Observatory at Castelgandolfo, founded by Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585) in 1576. Originally located in the Vatican's "Torre dei Venti" ("Tower of the Winds"), the Observatory was relocated to the Papal Palace at Castelgandolfo in 1930. It is the oldest astronomical institution in Europe.
- The designs include the names of each institution. Along the bottom appear the words POSTE VATICANE as well as the denomination. Sketches by Professor Lino Bianchi Bariviera inspired the illustrations. They were engraved by G. Verdelocco, M. Codoni, V. Puliti and F. Borrelli, respectively.
- The Italian State Polygraphic Institute and Mint printed 900,000 complete series. The stamps are horizontal in format, measure 48 x 40 mm, and are perforated 14 x 14. The firm produced the series on white chalky paper in multicolored offset, recess, and photogravure. The Vatican issued the stamps in sheets of twenty-five.
