V-Mail facsimile letter
Object Details
- Description
- V-Mail facsimile letter was sent by Lt. Albert W. Schreck at APO 668 [located at Casablanca, Morocco as of letter's date: April 15, 1943) to his wife in Lexington, Kentucky.
- Lt. Schreck wrote this letter while serving as staff at the 2nd Base Post Office and marked the occasion of the first roll of V-Mail microfilm to be sent from North Africa.
- The facsimile, common name for the photographic print produced from enlargement of 16 mm microfilm, measured one-quarter the size of the original letter sheet. Depending on the equipment and staffing available at the V-Mail stations around the globe, the facsimiles were either prepared by John Dickinson & Co. machinery (also used for the British Airgraph service) or individually cut, folded, inserted into envelopes, and sealed by hand.
