Object Details
- Description
- On December 12, 1988, Vatican City issued a series of six Christmas stamps designed by Luca Vangelli.
- The 50-, 400-, and 500-lire stamps feature images of angels bearing olive branches in flight above the clouds. Along the top of the stamps appear the denominations and the words POSTE VATICANE. At the bottom of each stamp appears the inscription GLORIA A DIO NEL PIU ALTO DEI CIELI LUCA 2-14.
- The 550-, 850-, and 1,500-lire stamps represent, respectively, shepherds, the Nativity, and the Three Wise Men. All three stamps include a background consisting of a group of mountains in stylized form. At the top of each stamp appears the inscription PACE IN TERRA AGLI UOMINI DI BUON.A VOLUNTÀ LUCA 2-14. At the bottom of the stamps appear the denomination and the words POSTE VATICANE.
- The stamps are vertical in format, measure 30 x 50.8 mm, and have a perforation of 13 1/4 x 14 1/4. Printed by rotogravure on white chalky paper, the stamps were issued in sheets of twenty.
- The Vatican also released a souvenir sheet containing one stamp of each value. The Italian State Polygraphic Institute and Mint printed 500,000 complete series and 500.000 souvenir sheets.
