Object Details
- Description
- On May 5, 1989, the Vatican issued a miniature sheet commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Gregorian Egyptian Museum consisting of four stamps.
- The 400-lire stamp features an image of a human body with the head of the bull Apis. The 650-lire stamps depict a two-faced bust with the faces of the goddess Isis and the bull Apis. The 750-lire stamp depicts the headless statue of the physician Ugiahorresne portrayed in the act of offering a small temple, naos, containing a statuette of the god Osiris. A hieroglyphic inscription describes the life of the physician. The 2,400-lire stamp features an image of Pharaoh Mentuhotep.
- Along the top of the miniature sheet appears the hieroglyphic inscription honoring Pope Gregory XVI (1765-1846), who founded the Gregorian Egyptian Museum on February 2, 1839. On the left side of the sheet appear a portrait of Pope Gregory XVI and the inscription 150th ANNIVERSARIO DELLA FONDAZIONE DEL MUSEO GREGORIANO-EGIZIO. At the right appears an image of a granite statue of Queen Tuya.
- The value and the dates 1839-1989 appear in the upper left and lower right corners, respectively. Along the left side of each stamp appears the inscription MUSEO GREGORIANO-EGIZIO, and at the right appear the words POSTE VATICANE.
- Patrizia Gabriele engraved the illustrations on the miniature sheet. The sheet is horizontal in format and measures 14 x 9.8 cm. At the center of the sheet are four stamps which measure 25.4 x 30 mm and have a perforation of 14 1/4 x 13 1/4. They were produced in multicolor offset and recess print.
