Object Details
- Description
- On November 9, 1989, the Vatican issued a series of five definitive stamps commemorating the journeys of Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) in 1988. The 550-lire stamp illustrates the pope's journey to Austria from June 23-27, 1988.
- All five stamps share a common design executed by Patrizio Babriele and Anna Maria Maresca. The pope in Episcopal vestments appears at the right. At the center appears a stylized globe representing a map of the country or countries visited. The Papal Coat of Arms appears at the left. The names of the countries appear at the top, and the dates of the visits appear at the lower center, directly beneath the globe. The denomination and the words POSTE VATICANE appear at the upper and lower left, respectively.
- The stamps are horizontal in format, measure 40 x 30 mm, and have a perforation of 14 x 13 1/4. The Italian State Polygraphic Institute and Mint printed them by rotogravure on white chalky paper by. They were issued in sheets of twenty.
