- Description
- On November 27, 1990, Vatican City issued a series of five Christmas stamps featuring details from a Nativity scene by Sebastiano Mainardi. The original painting hangs in the Picture Gallery of the Vatican Museums.
- Four of the five values are horizontal, measuring 40 x 30 mm. The image on the 50-lire stamp depicts a choir of angels; the image on the 200-lire stamp depicts St. Joseph; the image on the 650-lire stamp depicts the infant Jesus; and the image on the 750-lire depicts he Madonna. The fifth value, 2,500-lire, is vertical, measuring 30 x 40 mm. Its image reproduces the entire painting by Mainardi.
- The stamps include the inscriptions NATIVITAS D. N. I. CHRISTI MCMXC along the sides. The words POSTE VATICANE and the value appear along the bottom. The stamps have a perforation of 13 and were issued in sheets of twenty. Imprimerie des Timbre-Postes (France) produced the series by rotogravure on white chalky. The firm printed 450,000 complete series.
