- Description
- On June 5, 1990, the Vatican issued a series of four stamps and a souvenir sheet to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the founding of Caritas Internationals.
- Founded in 1950, Caritas Internationals is an international confederation of 120 national and autonomous organizations. According to its statutes, its task is to help its members "spread charity and social justice in the world." Subdivided into six geographic regions (Africa, Middle East and Northern Africa, Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia-Oceania), the Caritas organizations are active in over 120 countries throughout the world. Caritas Internationals maintains permanent delegations at the various United Nations headquarters and works closely with the Red Cross and other international humanitarian organizations.
- A mosaic in the apse of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Rome, inspired the stamp designs:
- 400-lire - Abraham
- 650-lire - The three visitors
- 800-lire - Abraham and his wife Sarah
- 2,000-lire - The three visitors seated at Abraham's table
- Helio Couvoisier S. A. of Switzerland printed 450,000 complete series using rotogravure. The stamps measure 36 x 36 mm, have a perforation of 11 3/4, and were printed in sheets of twenty. The firm printed the stamps on white chalky paper. The inscription CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS 1950-1990 appears along the left side of two values and along the right side of the other two values. At the bottom appear the words POSTE VATICANE and the value.
