City letter carrier cap badge, number 224
Object Details
- Description
- U.S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service wreath-style cap badge, number 224, with wire attachment clasps on verso. Nickel-plated figures surmount metallic wreath with bow.
- Shown is a letter carrier badge that met department specifications. The badge is made of German silver, a metallic element containing copper, zinc, and nickel. The Post Office Department chose this metal for its hardness and resistance to corrosion, important factors considering the letter carrier's work constantly exposed the badge to harsh and fluctuating weather conditions.
