- Wells, Fargo & Company was founded in 1852 by Henry Wells and William Fargo as an express company. The company operated stagecoach lines across the American west. At times the company also carried mail by contract for the U.S. Post Office Department. Wells and Fargo also owned and operated the Wells, Fargo & Company Bank, which continues in operation today as the Wells Fargo Bank.
