City letter carrier cap badge, number 81
Object Details
- Description
- U. S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service wreath-style cap badge, number 81, without attachment clasps on verso. Nickel-plated figures surmount metallic wreath with bow.
- Shown is a letter carrier badge that met department specifications. The badge is constructed of German silver, a metallic element containing copper, zinc, and nickel. The Post Office Department chose this metal because of its hardness and resistance to corrosion. This was an important factor considering the letter carrier's work constantly exposed the badge to harsh and fluctuating weather conditions.
