City letter carrier cap badge, number 1822
Object Details
- Description
- U.S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service cap badge, number 1822, with eyelet and tie attachment on verso.
- Before 1887 the individual postmaster determined whether the letter carriers would wear a badge as part of the uniform. Many postmasters found the insignia necessary since it clearly identified the carrier as a member of the Post Office Department. Shown here is one such example of a badge used before the Post Office Department mandated badges in 1887.
