Transatlantic cover to Haarlem, Netherlands

Object Details

Description
30 November 1845 folded letter from Philadelphia to Haarlem, Netherlands, paid 5¢ U.S. inland fee to New York. When first taken to the post office window in Philadelphia the 5¢ fee was marked in pencil, upper left corner. Later, three blue handstamps were applied in a separate operation based on the pencil notation: the Philadelphia circular datestamp, the octagonal PAID handstamp, and the double circle 5 handstamp. The letter was endorsed in the upper left corner for the Havre sailing packet of 1 December.
It was carried from New York on 5 December by the Union Line sailing packet "Baltimore," which sailed a few days later than intended, and arrived at Havre, France on 27 December 1845. The letter was sent to Paris (28 December) and through Belgium to the Netherlands, entering at Breda and arriving finally at Haarlem on 31 December 1845, where it was marked for 85 Dutch Cents postage due. Of this amount 50 Dutch Cents belonged to the French and 35 Dutch Cents to the Nehterlands for internal postage.
