Object Details
- Description
- 1-cent "Full Face" McKinley postal card. Designed by Raymond Ostrander Smith. UPSS S21.
- The rarest United States postal card was issued in error from rejected plates. Although the whole printed edition was condemned, one box of 500 was sold and put into circulation before the post office department knew of the slip. The rejected design, shown here, differs from the accepted one of the common card (U. S. Scott UX18) only in the portrait of McKinley.
- The box of cards was bought by a contracting firm and imprinted for reports of barge captains on the dumping of New York City garbage. Of the 500 cards, over 300 were actually used, and of these, 237 are known to have been lost in the sinking of a vessel in New York harbor.
