Object Details

Description
The Postal Service honored writer and cartoonist James Thurber (1894-1961) with the issuance of a 29-cent stamp on September 10, 1994, in his hometown, Columbus, Ohio. The stamp depicts a caricature drawn by Thurber.
Born in 1894, Thurber was best known for his writings and drawings featuring the snarling wife and her timid, hapless husband -- stock characters who have become classics of urban mythology. Thurber wrote many books, including an autobiography, "The Life and Hard Times" (1933), and several children's stories, including "The 13 Clock" (1950) and "The Wonderful O" (1957).
Designed by Richard Sheaff of Norwood, Massachusetts, the stamps were issued in sheets of fifty and printed in the combination offset/intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
