- Description
- The Postal Service issued a 32-cent US Department of the Air Force commemorative stamp on September 18, 1997, in Washington, DC.
- The stamp features four US Air Force Thunderbird aerial demonstration planes in flight, forming a classic diamond position. The stamp commemorated the 50th anniversary of the establishment in 1947 of the US Air Force as a separate service from the Army.
- Designed by Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia, the stamp is based on a photograph taken by Philip Handleman of Birmingham, Michigan. The stamps were printed in panes of twenty by Ashton-Potter (USA), Ltd., in the offset process.
