- Description
- A 20-cent commemorative stamp honoring the Library of Congress was issued on April 21, 1982, in Washington, DC. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Library of Congress.
- The Library of Congress complex consists of three buildings and is located on Capitol Hill. The Thomas Jefferson Building was completed in 1897 and was heralded as the largest library building in the world at that time. The John Adams Building was opened in 1939, and the James Madison Memorial Building in 1980.
- Bradbury Thompson of Riverside, Connecticut, based his design for the stamp on a photograph of the Thomas Jefferson Building taken in 1898 from the Capitol by the Detroit Publishing Company. It is believed that the photograph was taken in connection with the opening of the building. The modeler of the stamp was Clarence Holbert. The stamp was printed in the intaglio process and issued in panes of fifty stamps.
