- Description
- The 1982 contemporary and traditional Christmas stamps were issued on October 28th in separate locations. Additionally, a 13-cent Kitten and Puppy stamp was issued for use on postcards.
- The traditional Christmas stamp was issued in Washington, DC, and features a reproduction of Madonna and Child painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, an eighteenth century Italian artist. The painting is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, where the First Day of Issue ceremony took place. The stamp was designed by Bradbury Thompson of Riverside, Connecticut, and modeled by Ronald C. Sharpe.
- The contemporary Christmas design features a block of four snow scenes and was issued in Snow, Oklahoma, where the name of the city added a special seasonal identification to the First Day of Issue cancellation. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Recreation Center in Snow. The block of four colorful stamps features children sledding, skating, building a snowman, and decorating a Christmas tree. The stamps were designed by Dolli Tingle of Westport, Connecticut, and modeled by Frank J. Waslick.
- Both stamps were printed in the photogravure process and issued in panes of fifty.
- The 13-cent Kitten and Puppy special issue stamp was placed on sale November 3, 1982, in Danvers, Massachusetts. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Radisson Ferncroft Hotel during the convention of the Humane Society of the United States. The stamp was designed by Chuck Ripper, a noted wildlife artist whose previous design credits include the 1980 Coral Reefs stamps and the 1981 Preservation of Wildlife Habitats stamps. The stamp design features a kitten and a puppy playing in the snow. The modeler was Peter Cocci. The stamps were printed on the Gravure press and issued in panes of fifty.
