- Description
- A 25-cent regular stamp honoring Jack London was first issued in sheet form on January 11, 1988 in Glen Ellen, California. The stamp was designed by Jim Sharpe in Norwalk, Connecticut as the 27th issue in the Great American Series.
- Jack London was the most popular and highest paid American writer of his time. His relentless energy, storytelling skills and mastery of his craft enabled him to produce more than 50 books before his death in 1916 at age 40. London's best-known novels, "The Call of the Wild," "White Fang" and "The Sea Wolf," vividly portray the elemental struggle between man and nature.
- London crafted much of his art from his rich experiences as a farmer, sailor, hobo and gold prospector. In fact, his own adventures were often as remarkable as those of his characters.
- By the time he was 16, he had been owner and captain of an oyster sloop. He shipped out as a sailor on a seal hunting expedition at age 17 and traveled as far as Japan. At age 20, he hiked across the Chilkook Pass to the Klondike gold fields. Although that venture produced no gold, London returned with a wealth of unusual experiences which served as a basis for his powerful tales of Alaska and the raw northern wilderness.
- By 1906, at age 30, London already had written "The Call of the Wild" and "The Sea Wolf" and had achieved international fame.
- The stamp was reissued in new booklet formats on May 3, 1988 in San Francisco, California. Adaptation to booklet format required the use of two new printing sleeves (one for six-stamp panes and one for 10-stamp panes). As a result, stamps in the $1.50 and $3 booklets are slightly larger overall than those in the $5 booklet. Stamps in both booklet pane formats are a slightly different size than those produced in sheet format. The printed stamp images are identical in all cases, however. The three booklet cover designs are similar, but variations do exist in color, references to booklet value, and number of stamps included.
- The stamps were engraved through the intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, in panes of 100.
