- Description
- The US Postal Service celebrated seasonal festivities with the issuance of the 29-cent Happy New Year stamp on December 30, 1992, in San Francisco, California.
- The colorful commemorative stamp features a yellow rooster on a red background. Two Chinese characters on the left read in English, "Year of the Rooster," and in the upper right of the stamp the rooster declares, "Happy New Year!" in English. The horizontal stamp was available in a new format for commemoratives, panes of twenty stamps.
- Many countries celebrate the New Year on the first of a year. Ancient cultures often celebrated the lunar calendar. The rooster, the tenth animal in a twelve-animal cycle, symbolized the lunar calendar in 1993.
- Designed by Clarence Lee of Honolulu, Hawaii, the stamps were printed on the intaglio/offset press by the American Bank Note Company.
