Object Details
- Description
- The 33-cent California Gold Rush commemorative stamp was issued on June 18, 1999, in West Sacramento, California. The stamp was designed by Howard Paine of Delaplane, Virginia, and illustrated by John Berkey of Excelsior, Minnesota.
- This stamp features and image of prospectors mining a stream in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California during the 1849 Gold Rush. "Forty-niners" are shown using the basic tools of the time -- a pan and a rocker -- to separate particles of gold from gravel and sand. Although gold was actually discovered on January 24, 1848, 1999 was the 150th anniversary of the rush of many thousands of hopeful "forty-niners" to California to "strike it rich."
- Ashton-Potter (USA), Ltd., printed 89,270,000 stamps in the offset process.
