- Description
- A 37-cent Martin Johnson Heade "Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth" commemorative stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) double-sided book of twenty was issued on August 12, 2004, in Sacramento, California. Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed the stamp. Sennett Security Products manufactured 794 million gravure stamps.
- Inaugurated in 2001 with the Amish Quilts stamp pane, the American Treasures series has showcased beautiful American fine art and crafts. The 2002 and 2003 issuances featured artwork by John James Audubon and Mary Cassatt, respectively.
- For this fourth issuance in the American Treasures Series, art director Derry Noyes chose "Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth," a circa 1890 oil-on-canvas by Martin Johnson Heade. The painting is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
